Hey folks! Did you know I am a magician? It's true! In fact, I will do a magic trick for you right now. First, read this statement a friend I like to debate with sent to me recently about his view of a particular social issue...
"Gang violence is a major issue in this country. It uses significant resources and tax payer money to deal with. We, the public, pay for the repercussions every day of gang violence in America. A government program to use our tax dollars to give gang members free crack would be the best solution to this problem. With free crack will come a reduced amount of gang violence and the public will pay much less than if we simply throw money at dealing with the problem."
That's a pretty ridiculous statement, isn't it?
But wait! Now comes the magic trick. You see, this is not actually what my friend said. Watch as I alter only two different phrases to return this statement to what he actually said, and change the whole statement into something that not only doesn't sound ridiculous, but is something that many people in the country support currently...
"Unwanted pregnancy is a major issue in this country. It uses significant
resources and tax payer money to deal with. We, the public, pay for the
repercussions every day of unwanted pregnancy in America. A government
program to use our tax dollars to give women free birth control would be
the best solution to this problem. With free birth control will come a reduced
amount of unwanted pregnancy and the public will pay much less than if we
simply throw money at dealing with the problem."
For some readers, your first thought will be, "But, it's not the same thing!" Think about it for a moment. How is it any different?
I'm not comparing all women to gang members, obviously. I'm comparing one group of people responsible for their own actions to another.
America has become a country where we insist that our personal lack of responsibility is the fault of the public, not ourselves. If we misbehave, make sloppy choices in life or commit completely morally irresponsible acts, the fault lies on the general public for failing to prevent us from making those choices. This is what American has turned into.
If someone kills or injures themselves or goes financially bankrupt -- if their children are attacked by predators or grow up educationally or morally stunted -- this is OUR fault and WE have to pay for it. And now, as Monty Hall shows us what's behind curtain number three, we can see the next thing we shall all be responsible for is when a woman simply can't manage to keep her legs closed or a guy just can't bring himself to stop humping whatever he can get his hands on.
Getting pregnant is a very delicate act. Ask anyone who's tried to breed pandas. You don't just trip over a banana peel and wind up pregnant. It takes either a lot of effort or a lot of very shitty, very conscious decisions.
Sure, it will cost the American tax payer less to supply drugs to women to save them (and us) from the repercussions of their own bad decisions. But I, for one, miss the days when people accepted responsibility for their own choices. And, if it were up to me, not a single cent would be given to any American by the government to bail them out of their own stupidity. It is only through the consequences of our mistakes that we learn not to make those mistakes. Isn't it interesting that the more we save people from themselves, the more they need saving?
I've never understood this thinking either. It is easier than ever now to get things, in fact made that way so people wouldn't be able to make claims about it being out of their hands. When you can get birth control about anywhere, or a codom in a bathroom, you no longer can say you don't have access to preventive stuff.
ReplyDeleteI never took you as a hardcore republican, 2.
ReplyDeleteAnd you shouldn't! Because I'm not. :>
Delete2 I love most of your work, but i just have to disagree with you here. Bith Control doesnt just control pregnancy. It also helps alleviate the symptons of PCOS as well as regulate periods to a more natural rate. My fiancee would otherwise bleed for an entire month at a time. While i agree we shoukd be responsible for our own actions, it is the governments responsibilty to care for the safety and welfare of its citizens.
ReplyDeleteI understand that.
DeleteFirst off, this post is only responding to what was said by my friend. That is all I'm commenting on. I know there's a larger issue outside of this, but this post is only meant to confront to particular issue that is mentioned.
Secondly, as far as the issue you introduce goes... I understand that this medication alleviates symptoms of other problems. But if a person can get free medication to alleviate some unpleasant physical symptoms, then why can't we ALL get it? Why should someone have a free pharmaceutical remedy to PCOS while I still have to pay for the medication that treats my migraines? What it comes down to is inequality. If there is to be free medication to help people with physical problems, it shouldn't be only for SOME people and not for others. That's simply unfair.
suffering form a mild PCOS and migraines I totally agree. If I don't have insurance to pay for my pills I ask the pharmisist if there's a discount plan or a generic and budget to pay out of pocket. In most states, there is a branch of medicaid called "Family planning" that ONLY covers yearly female exams (Cancer prevention) and birth control (Or sterilization if that's your thing). The income limit for this is more then normal medicaid, meaning those people who literally live check to check and can't afford to go to the doc to get the Rx can get this insurance and do jsut that. Also, most big stores (Target, walmart, ect) offer certain pills for $7 a month, so it's also easy to call up a pharmacy and go "Hey, what is your lowest cost pill and how much is it?" then talk to your doc about your options.
DeleteIn responce to the "free meds" though, I know some grocery stores with pharmacies (Publix for example) do offer some antibiotics, BP meds, and other "nessicary" medications for free. Unfortunatly, pain meds don't count, so anyone with cronic pain or migraines are SOL. (I was told once "You can die from an infection or high BP, but a migraine is jsut discomfort for a little while" I hate people who never have them!) Mental health meds are also off the free list, but the common ones are on the discount lists.
I certainly agree with that which is why i support socialized healthcare in countries like germamy and canada.
ReplyDeleteThe first statement isn't all that ridiculous.
ReplyDeleteIf the government were to start handing out free crack, then you don't have to worry about gang wars over the stuff anymore. The criminal element surrounding the drug would be completely removed.
It's a lot like putting a band-aid on a cut. People expect the band-aid to magically heal the cut, and they don't realize their body actually has to heal itself. Society wants to run away from it's problems, cover up the mold and duck tape the leak. People want to make all the bad scary things go away without any effort. They want every knife in the land to be dull so they can't cut themselves, and the government to kiss their boo boo and make it go away.
ReplyDeleteHere is a solution!
ReplyDeleteTwo guys from somewhere that I can't remember in Europe, they were farmers and were caught having sex with one of the sheps of the owner of the farm. Instead of prison or penalty the owner made them marry with the sheep or else they would be hanged. Divorce would result in be hanged.
Now do the same with every guy that rape there and women that want to do an abortion!
Warning....coffee may be hot.
ReplyDeleteDiminished responsibility everywhere I'm afraid. A UK supermarket recalled packages of peanuts because their bags didn't say “may contain nuts.”
ReplyDeleteScapegoatism
ReplyDeleteThe birth control, I would say, isn't the issue.
ReplyDeleteIt's the lack of education on what birth control is, does, where to get it, how it affects your body, etc.
People can generally get it themselves when they're educated about it, but our abstinence only sex ed programs are kind of a shitshow.
Personally my thought is if we want to keep doing abstinence only, we kind of HAVE to give people free birth control, because they're too goddamn stupid to find it themselves.
